A rough estimation(as per last year)
Total around 6000-7000 seats in Tamil Nadu for M.E.
Out of tht only 800-900 GATE seats, Rest all for TANCET
Exceptions: only PSG, CIT, GCT has more GATE seats; but left over seats do come for TANCET counselling,
Private Colleges have 90% TANCET seats
CEG, MIT, TCE has 20-25% GATE seats , and 75% TANCET seats (all these are tentative, and scenario may change this year)
some information about cut off as per last year:
above 47/48 is sure for oc, very sure for bc and mbc.
above 45 is sure for bc or mbc, but moderate chance for top courses in CEG for oc
above 43 is limiting for oc in CEG, but bc , mbc have good chances for good courses
above 40 oc can get top private colleges, but bc and mbc has moderate chances for good courses
CEG has more tancet seats rather than gate. But PSG is 95 % gate seats. Leftover seats do come for tancet counselling, but chances are rare for PSG unless we have a score above 50. as per 2010 scenerio, top colleges tht get filled up within first 2 sessions of counselling on its first day are:
CEG, PSG, MIT , TCE, GCT, SSN..etc. for top courses like applied electronics, CSE, VLSI, comm. systems, software engg., IT, embedded systems…. and OC seats go like as soon as they could:)
Some information about allocation of seats during counselling:
Other state candidate is under open community(OC) category. 69% reserved seats and 31% for OC…. Now u have to compete with the students who scored more than u… suppose there are 5 students(student-mark format)..S1-44, S2-45, S3-46, S4-46.5, S5-48…. now they will call students in the order S5, S4, S3, S2, S1 in counselling…. (note: all the students can be from different branches)…. suppose u r the S3 student….now the competition comes when the students S4 and S5 choose the branches in which u r interested or when they are from ur branch….if those S4and S5 is from some other branch it hardly matters and ur chances are fair…. now consider the fact that students S4 and S5 are both from BC community…. and S3, S4 and S5 are opting for the same branch… S3 is an OC…. (by default when any BC candidate is choosing a seat , first seat is alloted from the OC seats..when the OC seats are over, BC seats are taken into account for only BC candidates….) now lets come to the above scene described:
case A: suppose now there is one BC seat and one OC seat remaining for the branch. S5 though BC, but will be offered the branch seat from OC AND S4 being BC also takes the one BC seat remaining for the branch and S3 (OC) gets nothing…
case B: suppose now there is one BC seat and two OC seats remaining for the branch. S4 and S5 is first alloted from the 2 OC seats and S3 again gets nothing being an OC and the one BC seat still remaining..
case C: suppose now there is two BC seats and one OC seat. now S5 gets the branch seat from the OC seats available.and S4 gets the branch seat from BC seats available…. and S3 again gets nothing though one BC seat is still remaining
case D: if there are 3 OC seats and 2 BC seats. then S3 gets a seat.
becoz even after selection of 2 OC seats by S4 and S5, one seat in OC is still remaining for S3.
NOTE
1) your competition lies only with the ones who scored above you.
2) in the above example we assumed all these S3, S4, S5 want the same branch…situation is better for S3 if S4 and S5 want some other branch which may have different OC, BC seats available to choose
some common questions which are asked by students! I know as the results are out this post may be irrelevant, but i am keeping all this info at one place so that next year students are benefited…
question 1: Part – II Basic Engineering & Sciences :
This part will have 45 objective type questions. The candidates should answer a minimum of 30 questions. All the correct answers upto a maximum of 30 will be awarded 1 mark each and for all the wrong answers 1/4 mark shall be deducted for each.
student may ask : how are the marks calculated for this section in TANCET exam?
Answer:
The main concept is:
case 1: Suppose u attempt all the 45 questions in PART II, and all of them are correct, then u will get a maximum score of 30 marks only in that section (and not 45 marks)…
case 2: Suppose u attempt all the 45 questions , and out of them 20 are wrong, then ur score will be (25*1)-(20*0.25)=20
case 3: Suppose u attempt only 10 questions and all were correct, then ur score is 10.
case 4: Suppose u attempt only 30 questions, and out of them 10 are wrong. Then ur score will be (20*1)-(10*0.25)=17.5…. (this case is a variant of 2nd case)
so the main thing is that…for every correct answer u get 1 mark, for every wrong one, u get 0.25 deducted. If all the 45 answers are correct, u will get a maximum score of 30 only in that section.
A case can also be like… suppose u attempted all the 45 questions, and only 1 answer is wrong out of that; then what will be your score?
Will they give you full 30 marks OR your score will be 30-(1*0.25)= 29.75!!!!
[Note: (44*1)-(1*0.25)=43.75 CANNOT be a score in this case because it crosses the maximum limit which is 30 marks]
I think in this kind of situation, your score will be 29.75, as this seems to be logical :)
question 2: As the negative marking is 0.25 for every 1 mark question wrongly answered, then we can have only scores like 40, 40.25, 40.5, 40.75, 41, etc… Then how can we have a score like 40.178?
Answer: this 40.178 is a relative score and is not your actual score. This is calculated based on this formula [Normalised marks = 50 + (10/s) (raw mark – m)] where m = mean, s= standard deviation, raw mark= the actual mark scored.

last year many people applied in GATE counselling who have scored less, and they were also called for counselling. Actually valid score determines if u are eligible for stipend or not, though good colleges in India prefer valid GATE scores.
If u select a seat via GATE counselling and u have a valid score , then u will get scholarship from AICTE.
But if u select a seat via GATE counselling and your score is not a valid one, then u will not get any stipend from AICTE.
(Note: suppose anyone have a valid gate score, and he/she did not get the course of his choice in GATE counselling, he can drop out and go for TANCET counselling next day. If that person chooses the seat via TANCET counselling, he/she will not get any stipend even if the score he/she got was a valid one).
Some information about counselling:
There are 3 categories for counselling.
1) GATE A category(with GATE score only)- separate rank list will be prepared for students applied in GATE category; counselling will be held on the first day.
Note: As GATE category counselling is held on the first day, tht doesn’t mean preference is given to GATE students.. fixed no. of seats are alloted for GATE students… And if any seats in GATE category are left out, then this comes for TANCET counselling(which starts from the next day). Out of 6500 seats(approx) for TANCET, only 800 seats(approx) are for GATE category.
2) GATE B category(with GATE score and TANCET score)- only for Life science student
3)TANCET category(with TANCET score only)- separate rank list will be prepared for students applied in TANCET category ; counselling held from the 2nd day.
Note: A student can apply in both GATE category and TANCET category separately, in two application forms… Only Life Science students can apply with both the scores in one application form….
In CEG, Self-Supporting courses( like MTech- IT, ME -VLSI, etc.) are having seats only for TANCET category, and NOT for GATE category. BUT Self-Supporting courses in PSG, TCE, GCT, CIT are also given to GATE category students. Rules may change these year.
